Getting married? Here are five reasons why you should tie the knot in Valencia

Planning an international wedding? Look no further than Valencia, Spain. Offering a mild Mediterranean climate with 300 days of sunshine every year, a city steeped in history and tradition, with a wealth of architecture and a gastronomy rich in fresh local produce, Valencia is one of the most welcoming cities on the Mediterranean — and one of the most affordable.

These are just some of the reasons that have made Valencia the preferred destination for discerning couples seeking to marry abroad.

In recent years we have seen a large increase in the number of international weddings, particularly from the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia and Mexico,” said Ángela Cócera, director of venues at Gourmet Catering & Eventos, a leading company in Valencia’s active wedding sector. She explains the five reasons why international guests choose Valencia for their weddings.

1. Mild Mediterranean climate

Valencia’s Mediterranean climate offers warm summers and mild winters with an average annual temperature of 20°C, long summer days and little chance of rain, making it an ideal choice for outdoor celebrations

“In Valencia we rarely have abrupt weather changes, as can happen in other parts of Europe where you can go from sunshine to rain in a matter of minutes, giving the bride and groom peace of mind and allowing them to celebrate outside,” confirms Ángela.

The city offers unique locations such as the Albufera Natural Park, the Valencian market gardens or the beaches of La Malvarrosa and El Saler, where you can enjoy a weekend of celebration in perfect weather conditions.

2. Traditional country houses and unique enclaves
Valencia has great architectural wealth, with a wide variety of estates and mansions dating back to before the 17th century, traditional ‘barracas’, and eye-catching contemporary buildings, all available and suitable for wedding celebrations.

One of the most popular internationally is the spectacular Ara Christi Carthusian monastery that dates back to 1585 and is now restored with indoor and outdoor spaces available. It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1996.

The many traditional Valencian fincas, properties formerly used for farming that have been adapted to host events, are another popular option. Guests can immerse themselves in the incredible natural environment of the region. Valencia is an accessible and welcoming city where you can travel easily and over short distances. The centre is only 15 minutes from the airport, making it easy for family and guest arrivals and departures.

3. Mediterranean gastronomy

The famous Mediterranean diet offers fresh, local ingredients, cuisine to suit all palates and balanced menus with delicious vegetarian options that turn a wedding celebration into an authentic Mediterranean gastronomic experience.

The famous Valencian paella, desserts made with traditional horchata, or ‘agua de Valencia’ cocktails, are just some of the options on offer.

4. Hospitality and tradition
The Valencians are known for their warm and hospitable character, which stems from the city’s openness to the Mediterranean and its many peoples and cultures. This leads them to get involved in the whole process of organising weddings, establishing a great rapport with the bride and groom, and flexibility in personalising the many options available.

Valencia, as a city with a markedly festive character, has many renowned wedding planners who have established trends in wedding celebrations at national and international levels in recent years.

Traditional festive events such as fireworks are an added attraction for international clients who may choose to surprise their guests with a ‘mascletà’ display after the ceremony.

5. Affordability
Compared to other Spanish cities and many European countries and the United States, Valencia is a competitive destination in terms of transport, accommodation and catering costs, allowing for celebrations of several days at reasonable prices.
