A Storytelling Dinner Honoring Valencian Resilience
We Turned Gastronomy into a Symbol of Hope after the DANA at a Barceló Hotel Group Event
Early in 2025, we received a very special assignment: to organize the annual directors’ convention for Barceló Hotel Group, following the company’s decision to move the event to Valencia as a gesture of support for the city’s economic recovery after the DANA storm.
The gala dinner drew inspiration from one of Valencia’s most iconic traditions: the Batalla de Flores, Spain’s oldest flower battle, celebrated since 1891. We created a menu in which every course became a metaphor for transformation and hope, incorporating edible flowers, humble roots, and wild herbs—ingredients that thrive on the margins and, on this occasion, became a symbol of resilience. As the song by Xoel López reminds us, “the most beautiful flowers are born from the mud.”
Thus, the culinary concept became a tribute to the city after the devastation caused by the DANA, celebrating life, resilience, and the solidarity of the Valencian people.
“The key was for the gastronomy not only to nourish but also to tell a story and convey a message. We wanted every dish to speak of Valencia’s ability to bloom in the face of adversity,” explains Carlos González, Executive Chef of Gourmet Catering & Events.
The idea was completed with a fully immersive staging: décor, ambiance, staff attire, and wine pairing—all inspired by the Batalla de Flores.
“It was essential to choose local products and work with suppliers affected by the DANA. From the most difficult situations, the most beautiful things can bloom, and this dinner proved it,” notes Montserrat Gil Nájera, General Manager of Barceló Valencia.
Finalist for the 2025 Eventoplus Award for Best Catering
With this event, we were finalists for the second consecutive year in the Best Catering category at the prestigious Eventoplus Awards, which annually recognize the most outstanding projects in the events and meetings sector across Spain and Portugal. After winning the award in 2024, this year we were honored with the bronze category in an edition that received 261 entries across 19 different categories, showcasing an exceptionally high standard.
“This recognition belongs to our entire team and to the city of Valencia. We have shown that even in the most challenging times, creativity and unity can transform into memorable experiences,” says Raquel Vicente, General Manager of Gourmet Catering & Events.
In addition to creativity and innovation, the Eventoplus Awards particularly value responsible impact: sustainable production, social purpose, and the ability to generate positive change. All these elements are part of the DNA of Gourmet Catering & Events, whose approach is defined as gastronomy with purpose: cuisine that communicates, inspires, and transforms.
